The declaration for the 5th June global celebration every year for environment originated from the United Nations General Assembly during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, 1972.
On that day, each Member State would be required to reflect on efforts put in place at national level with regards to protection of the environment and also reaffirm her commitment to sustainable environmental management in the respective country.
This day also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet. Over the years this day has grown to be a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries.
And now this year’s WED global celebrations will be held in Expo Milano in Italy, under the theme “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care’’This is building from the fact that many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. It is estimated that by 2050, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption if current consumption and production patterns remain the same especially with a rising population which is expected to reach 9.6 billion. This therefore calls for responsible and thus sustainable management of planet’s natural resources to promote a sustained well being of Humanity, environment and functioning economic growth.
Expo Milano has it full this year, as other two important global events will be celebrated there that is; World Humanitarian Day on 19th August 2015 and the World Food Day on 16th October 2015. Watch out for this!!
